By Kentucky Chinese American Association Posted: February 1st, 2010Kentucky Chinese American Association (KYCAA) will present the 2010 Chinese New Year Celebration at the Lexington Opera House on Feb. 6, 2010. Between 5:00pm-6:45pm, there will be a holiday market with festival foods, crafts, traditional costumes, cultural displays and activities the whole family can enjoy. The event is open to the public, but tickets are required for admission to the stage performance that will start at 7:00pm. We expect a full house for this important holiday event. The number of seats available is very limited. You may pick up your free tickets at Rupp Arena ticket office. You may call (859) 233-3535, visit the website www.kyacap.org or email to jiexchen@hotmail.com for more information.
The stage performance will be a unique interactive experience of Chinese-American culture directed by noted Chinese dance artist Cheryl Pan, a performer on the Kentucky Arts Council Performing Artist Directory and Arts Education Roster. As she has done in the past few years, she will present several amazing group dances that have rarely been seen before in Kentucky. She will also host this event with Mr. Bill wens, the President of the Lexington Center.
The performance will also include a selection of Chinese songs and music on pipa, Zhongruan, Erhu, dizi, Beijing Opera, martial arts and lion dance by invited professional artists including a group led by Pipa player, Min Ke from Cincinnati, UK Chinese Ensemble directed by Dr. Guohuang Han, Professional Chinese singer Shanshan Zeng, Nine Dragon Kungfu and Lexington Chinese Christian Church choir. To highlight the interaction between Kentucky traditions and the Chinese culture, Abigail Washburn, a bluegrass musician from Nashville, will bring to the event a unique blend of bluegrass music and Chinese songs. She has spent several years in China and can sing many songs in Chinese including those she recorded in the area affected by the devastating Sichuan earthquake in 2007.
Attendance to the Chinese New Year Celebration in the past few years has reached more than 1500 visitors. We expect a full house for this event. Please reserve your tickets ASAP or you may have to miss the show.
