Ball raises money to fight heart disease and stroke; special honoree is Penny Chenery
For almost 86 years, the American Heart Association has taken the fight aggressively to heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers.
Twenty-one years ago, the association intensified the battle with the introduction of a black-tie event called the Heart Ball. This year, for the 22nd time, the organization and its allies will get together for what promises to be another stellar night of auction action, fine dining and terrific dance music. The 2009 Central Kentucky Heart & Stroke Ball will be Saturday, February 27 in the Bluegrass Ballroom at Lexington Center. The reception and silent auction starts at 6:30 p.m., and dinner and the live auction are at 8 p.m. Dance music follows—the Souled Out Band will be back by popular demand.
Mike Turner, gala director for the American Heart Association, said this year’s event will have a special honoree: Penny Chenery, owner of Kentucky Derby winner Riva Ridge and Triple Crown winner Secretariat—and a survivor of heart disease—will be on hand.
Co-chairs for this year’s Heart Ball are Walter and Terri Hillenmeyer.
Proceeds from sponsorships and ticket and table sales will go to the American Heart Association, which funds advocacy, education and scientific research into cardiovascular diseases and stroke. One recipient of these grants is the University of Kentucky, with total active awards of more than $3.5 million.
Over the decades, American Heart Association research funding has contributed to such gains in the fight against heart disease and stroke as CPR, the pacemaker, and surgical and medical advances.
