PRHBTN 2.0

By Melanie Horn Posted: September 19th, 2012

From our National Championship glory this April we know that Lexington is filled with talent, thanks to our basketball team but what about the rest of the talent that is lingering on the streets, literally, of Lexington? Look around, it might be hidden but the street art around Lexington and all over inspires many of Lexington’s local artist. It also has inspired the art and music showcase PRHBTN (pronounced prohibition).

John Winters, co-founder of PRHBTN, worked in the music business for years, and last year PRHBTN came to be. John, along with co-founder Jessica Case, wanted to bring together something that would bring art and music together, but not only that but something where everyone could check out new music and art they may have never explored.

PRHBTN brings in national, regional and local artists and musicians. This year Herakut is coming in to showcase their talents. Based out of Germany, this duo has shown that even though much of it is considered illegal, street art is in fact just that, art. On September 11, they began a mural on Market St and had open sessions for people to come by and watch. On Thursday they began their second mural on North Limestone and Sixth Street. John believes that bringing Herakut in is opening Lexington to a world stage and giving local artist the chance to interact with other artist. Herakut has left their mark all over the world, New York and Los Angeles amongst these cities, and will now be leaving their mark on Lexington.

“Seems that art never caters to a younger demographic,” catering to a younger audience, in avoidance of the stuffy stereotypes of art, is exactly what PRHBTN accomplishes. Some of the artist are actually giving a preview of what kind of thing you will see at PRHBTN on September 21st at pARTy, which is hosted by The Lexington Art League. Any art sold during PRHBTN, thirty percent of proceeds will go to a local charity. “We want to take it in and push it back to the point where it goes to creating more art.”

Art not your thing? Don’t worry, there will be plenty of local and national musicians to check out. Nationally, Wick-It the Instigator will be playing a set as well as Mac Lethal. Mac Lethal, a socially conscious rapper who as John describes, “does his own thing,” is also the mastermind behind the hilarious Texts from Bennett. Local artist include Nemo Achida, DJ Warren Peace and Parliament. If you want a preview of these acts, all are on SoundCloud so take a listen.

Expect it to be a taste of something you don’t see often enough in Lexington. Not convinced yet? John says to expect it to be a big party, “If you are going to spend money to come out to our event, we want you to leave thinking, I had a great time. And it was something different.”

PRHBTN takes place on Friday, October 5 at Buster’s Billards & Backroom, with the art show taking place earlier in the evening. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door and can be bought at Buster’s and CD Central. For more info, check out their website www.PRHBTN.com and on Twitter @prhbtn.
