In salute of Breast Cancer Awareness Month TOPS is proud to share the stories of 23 survivors.
Meet Margaret Yost.
Faith in God gave this survivor the strength to fight. Married for 42 years, Margaret and her husband Bob are blessed with a son, daughter-in-law, and 4 year old granddaughter. She lives in Harlan and attends the Harlan Christian Church. Two years ago, she had a regularly scheduled mammogram appointment, which detected her breast cancer. She remembers being in shock when she found out the news.
After her diagnosis, Margaret leaned on her family, friends and church for support. Scripture, as well as local friends who were also “fighting the fight,” provided resources and help. She believes that God wanted her to take this journey with Him and that hand in hand, He has led the way.
Margaret’s biggest challenge during her journey has been not giving up. She admits, “At first it feels as though your life is over—then determination sets in to fight—fight for your life.” She expresses the importance of trying to not let cancer dictate how she is going to use her time and energy and also to understand that this can happen to any woman.
A year after her breast cancer diagnosis, Margaret was diagnosed with another form of cancer. She encourages all to “know how precious each day is” and to “keep focused on living each day, a day at a time, step by step.”
