Artists looking to publicly display their artwork may be in luck. LexArts, in partnership with Lexington Fayette Urban County Government Corridors Commission, is accepting artwork proposals and sculpture submissions for a beautification project in preparation for the October 2015 Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
Selected outdoor artwork and sculptures will be temporarily displayed in eight locations, leading into Lexington from I-75 to Keeneland and Blue Grass Airport.
LexArts, Lexington’s “premier cultural development, advocacy and fund raising organization,” stated on their website, seeks two submissions: the Breeders’ Cup Beautification Public Art Request for Proposal and the Breeders’ Cup Beautification Call for Sculpture. Each request has its own specific requirements.

LexArts has budgeted $40,000 for the public art submissions to cover insurance, installation, transportation of artwork and other associated costs. The group outdoor sculpture show has additional funding.
“We would like the four Public Art sites to be connected somehow, and we do envision working with one artist (or collaborative artist group) to maintain a cohesive element from one site to the next,” said Becky Alley, LexArts special projects coordinator. “For the group show sites, we do plan to group pieces together. We don’t know now how those groupings will be determined exactly, it will depend on what is submitted.”
A $1,000 honorarium will be given to each of the 12 sculptors who are selected to participate in the project. This will cover the cost of transportation and installation. Sculptors are responsible for installing and deinstalling their artwork.
The subject matter of all artwork and sculptures should be appropriate for the public and structurally sound and safe to display. A committee of representatives from LFUCG and LexArts will review the entries and make a selection. Installation takes place in October. The deadline to apply is Sunday, July 5 at midnight.

In addition to the beautification project, Saint Joseph East is seeking to purchase artists’ original work. Paintings, photography and other visual art will be displayed in public areas for the enjoyment of patients and their families.
The hospital is looking for artwork related to nature and landscapes. All work should create a “calming and healing environment,” according to a press release from LexArts. Strictly abstract artworks will not be considered.
Saint Joseph East will purchase about 30 two-dimensional works of all types. Photographers and printmakers are asked to submit works that have not been purchased by any Saint Joseph facility. The deadline to submit artwork is Tuesday, June 30 at midnight.
