Alexis and Matthew Broaddus are one of those rare couples that fell in love in high school and never looked back. Natives of Louisville, Kentucky, the high school sweethearts were drawn together by a passion for adventure. The couple stood the test of time because they not only bring out the best in one another, they highlight one another.
Their engagement took place at the Red River Gorge, during a camping trip. Matt sold the adventure to Alexis as an opportunity to relax and unwind, but she was surprised at the idea, considering it was raining. Still, he seemed enthusiastic, so she agreed to go. They enjoyed a leisurely drive through the winding roads but Alexis suggested that, with the rain, they might want to head home until the sun came out. Undeterred, Matt pulled over to take some pictures of the landscape.
The rain had lessened, so Alexis turned her focus to the pictures. Caught up in photography, she was only half-listening as Matt said something about how much he loved her and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. She responded with a casual, “I love you, too, and yes, that sounds good.” It was only when he got down on one knee that she realized what was happening. When he asked her to marry him, she said, “Of course, yes!” The rain stopped and the newly engaged couple spent the weekend camping at the Red River Gorge.
Alexis and Matt were married on October 4th, 2014 at Hurstbourne Country Club in Louisville. The couple chose the location because of the historic beauty of the grounds and the majestic, outdoor altar that served as the backdrop for their ceremony. The bride’s favorite color is purple, so the bridesmaids wore dark purple and the groomsmen, charcoal gray tuxes. With the vibrant colors of the fall complimenting the scene, the location served as a natural setting for the happy couple.
After the wedding, there was a special moment designed to welcome Alexis to the family. Matt’s father and aunts presented her with a precious family heirloom – a pearl ring that had belonged to Matt’s grandmother. The couple also honored their families with a special table set up with pictures of those who had passed.
The reception was held on site and had a rustic chic, fall theme. Matt’s brother-in-law made the night memorable by serving as a DJ, and the couple absolutely adored their wedding cake from Sweet Surrender. It was three layers of delicious flavors: a carrot cake filled with bourbon glaze, white cake filled with strawberry glaze and white cake with a caramel apple filling.
When asked to offer advice to other couples about planning a big day, Alexis and Matt highlighted the importance of spending time with guests. “We would have taken photos before the wedding or chosen another day to get all dressed up again to take wedding photos. This way we could have spent a little more time at the party!”
