Brick by Brick...A Civil Rights Story

Brick by Brick: A Civil Rights Story is a one-hour television documentary about a contemporary American battle for civil rights. It follows three families in Yonkers, New York, in the middle of a confrontation about the politics and law of racial discrimination in housing and schools that challenges and changes their hometown. Brick by Brick describes how a ghetto was created through public policies. The film initially paints a picture of isolation for many people of color in the city, most of whom are living in segregated neighborhoods served by failing schools. The primary storytellers are local people from different backgrounds, who relate their personal encounters with housing and educational discrimination, as well as others who experience very different opportunities across town. Event co-sponsored by Lexington Fair Housing Council and “I am” Diversity Movement Free and Open to the Public.

James C. Nicholson: Signing "The Kentucky Derby"

Each year on the first Saturday in May, the world turns its attention to the twin spires of Churchill Downs for the high-stakes excitement of the "greatest two minutes in sports," the Kentucky Derby. No American sporting event can claim the history, tradition, or pageantry that the Kentucky Derby holds. For more than 130 years, spectators have been fascinated by the magnificent horses that run the Louisville track. Thoroughbreds such as Secretariat and Barbaro have earned instant international fame, along with jockeys such as Isaac Murphy, Ron Turcotte, and Calvin Borel. This book describes the great tradition to post and illuminates its history and culture.

Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana / Leoncavallo's Pagliacci

Opera's most enduring tragic double bill returns in an evocative new production from Sir David McVicar, who sets the action across two time periods, but in the same Sicilian village. Marcelo Álvarez rises to the challenge of playing the dual tenor roles of Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana and Canio in Pagliacci. Rae Smith (War Horse) has designed the moodily atmospheric 1900 village square setting of Cavalleria, which transforms to a 1948 truck stop for the doomed vaudeville troupe of Pagliacci. Eva-Maria Westbroek (Cavalleria Rusticana) and Patricia Racette (Pagliacci) sing the unlucky heroines, and Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi is on the podium. Tickets: $23 Adults / $18 Students

Wandering Storytellers

Join us the last Monday of every month for a rip roaring good time at the Farish Theater in the Lexington Public Library. One of two formats will be presented each month. Most months will have a featured storyteller who will tell for 30 - 45 minutes. Listen in as the teller spins tales, transports, and entertains all within earshot. Audience members are welcome to share their stories during open mic times after the featured storyteller. The other format is a story slam held four times a year. Tellers will tell a five minute story. Ties will be broken with ever shorter stories - 4 minutes, 3 minutes! Come compete, volunteer to judge, or simply enjoy the stories. If you love stories -- hearing them, telling them -- you'll want to join us! Stories begin at 7:00 p.m. and run until 8:45. Cover: $5.00. This event raises funds to support Kentucky Storytelling Association programs and projects, and is presented in partnership with the Lexington Public Library.
