Bill To Require Training On Head Injuries For Coaches Passes House

02/03/2012 10:44 AM
Bill To Require Training On Head Injuries For Coaches Passes House

On Thursday, the Kentucky House passed a bill that would require all middle school and high school coaches to complete training relating to recognizing and treating concussions and head injuries.

HB 281 passed unanimously by a vote of 99-0. It will now move on for consideration in the Senate.

If the Senate passes the bill and the governor signs it, beginning next year, "the state board or its agency shall require each interscholastic coach to complete training on how to recognize the symptoms of a concussion and how to seek proper medical treatment for a person suspected of having a concussion. The training shall be approved by the state board or its agency and may be included in the sports safety course required under subsection (1)(a) of this section."

The law would also set up guidelines for coaches to follow when a student-athlete suffers a head injury.

"A student athlete suspected by an interscholastic coach, school representative, or contest official of sustaining a concussion during an athletic practice or competition shall be removed from play at that time and shall not return to play prior to the ending of the practice or competition until the athlete is evaluated to determine if a concussion has occurred. The evaluation shall be completed by a physician, advance practice registered nurse, physician's assistant, or certified athletic trainer. A student athlete shall not return to play on the date of a suspected concussion absent the required evaluation."

If an athlete did suffer a concussion, she or he would have to be cleared by a physician before returning to competition.

Rep. Joni L. Jenkins (D-Shivley) sponsored the bill in the House.

Cap On Merit Aid For High School Athletes Upheld

12/29/2011 09:50 AM
Cap On Merit Aid For High School Athletes Upheld

LOUISVILLE (AP) - A federal appeals court has upheld a ruling in Kentucky allowing a limit on merit-based scholarships for high school athletes at private schools.

The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the claims of parents of four Louisville private school students who sued over the issue in 2009. The parents want the case appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, their attorney Teddy Gordon told The Courier-Journal.

The parents argued the rules force students to choose between participating in sports and getting tuition assistance they would otherwise be entitled to. The schools did not sue.

The appeals said Dec. 21 that the claims lacked merit and upheld a ruling by the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky.

The rules prohibit students who want to compete in athletics from getting more than 25 percent of their tuition costs covered by merit-based scholarships. They also prohibit students from receiving funding from sources outside of the school's "custody and control." There is no cap on need-based financial aid.

Kentucky High School Athletic Association Commissioner Julian Tackett said he was pleased with the ruling. He said it was crafted by private schools.

"They just don't have the funding to be throwing money around on athletic scholarships," he said.

The rules, which were adopted before the 2007-08 school year, helped "address perception issues" that private schools were stacking their teams with athletic recruits, Tackett said.

Gordon said the decision was disappointing.

"The Court failed to recognize the religious freedom of these Roman Catholic and Christian students who want to participate in Kentucky high school sports without losing their badly needed tuition that was provided to them based on their academic abilities," he said. "We are hopeful the KHSAA will review the ruling and stop penalizing academic achievement and their continual acrimony against all parochial schools."

Kentucky High School Bowlers Take To Lanes

12/20/2011 12:16 PM
Kentucky High School Bowlers Take To Lanes

Kentucky high schoolers have a new avenue to exercise their competitive spirit this year. Last month, bowling made its debut as a recognized high school sport in the Commonwealth.

In its first season as a KHSAA championship sanctioned sport, 80 schools are fielding squads. Bowling was offered as a non-sanctioned club sport last year, with 54 schools participating.

"Once we conducted our triennial survey of schools and saw the interest for bowling, we knew many schools would really take the ball and run with it,"  KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett said. "Frankly, if someone had asked me if we would have 80 schools participating in year one, I would have thought that might be a little too optimistic, but it shows just how much our schools and student-athletes are craving participation and healthy competition."

The first high school bowler inked her name in the record books last Thursday. Fern Creek's JoJo Miller bowled the first 300 in a KHSAA-sanctioned match against Bullitt Central at AMF Derby Lanes in Louisville.

The KHSAA classifies bowling as a winter sport, with the season beginning the week of Nov. 28. The association will crown its first state champions at the Ebonite/KHSAA State Bowling Championships on the weekend of March 23-24 at Executive Bowl in Louisville.

East Jessamine Athletic Teams Giving Back To Community

The East Jessamine High School Athletic Department has joined with the Salvation Army to "Make Christmas Dreams Come True" for children in need. The various Jaguar teams have taken on 50 Angel Tree angels and are collecting gifts for the children.

"It's a way for us to give back to a community that supports and donates to our sports programs all year long. In the true spirit of Christmas, we're reminded of those in our area who need our help, and what we can do to make a difference," East Jessamine girls' soccer coach DeAngelo Wiser said.

For more information on the Angel Tree program, visit the Salvation Army website here.

Anderson County Loses To Bowling Green

Anderson County Loses To Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) - Scooter Hollis passed for two touchdowns and Bowling Green won its first state title since 1995 with a 55-3 rout of Anderson County on Saturday night in the Class 5A championship game.

The Purples (15-0) appeared in three straight championship games from 2005-07, but didn't break through until this season when they won five playoff games by more than 25 points apiece.

Hollis rushed eight times for 103 yards and completed 8 of 9 for 205 yards passing. His touchdown passes went to KJ Cofer and Jalen Hunter.

Bowling Green scored on five straight possessions in the first half and engaged a running clock with 5:25 left in the third quarter on Cofer's interception returned for a touchdown. Cofer's 73-yard touchdown was his only catch of the game.

Seth Carmichael finished 15 of 35 passing for 127 yards to lead Anderson County (12-3) in its first state championship appearance.

UK Commit Towles Wins 4th State Championship

12/03/2011 09:46 PM
UK Commit Towles Wins 4th State Championship

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) - Patrick Towles started his high school career modestly as Highlands' backup freshman team quarterback.

"And now he's the best player in the state," said Highlands coach Dale Mueller.

Towles earned the compliment Saturday, posting more than 100 yards rushing and passing in the Bluebirds' 42-14 Class 4A championship win over Franklin-Simpson.

Highlands (15-0) won its fifth state title in a row and 21st overall, tying Louisville Trinity's mark set Friday in the Class 6A game for most in Kentucky.

"We're excited about being a part of the whole 21 thing, but really it's about these guys and this fraternity of guys right here," Mueller said.

That starts with Towles, who shaved his No. 8 into the side of his head and was first to jump into a mob of Highlands students celebrating after the game.

"The guy is a man in every aspect of the word, and he's also a fun little guy that just loves being on a team and competing to win," Mueller said. "You just don't find any better than him."

A verbal commitment to Kentucky, Towles rushed 19 times for 122 yards and a touchdown and went 12 of 18 for 183 yards and a touchdown through the air.

Running back Zach Harris added 90 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns, spoiling the first Franklin-Simpson (13-2) championship game appearance since 1995.

"It's a true testament to how hard we've worked," Towles said. "We just played awesome today."

Highlands, which scored no fewer than 35 points and as many as 79 in games this season, posted 324 yards of total offense against a Franklin-Simpson unit that came in giving up 218 yards a game.

The Bluebirds built a lead on scoring drives of 95 and 99 yards in the first half. The latter was set up by Wildcats' running back Darrius Wickware's fumble on the Highlands 1-yard line.

Instead of tying the score at 14-14, Franklin-Simpson entered the half trailing 21-7. The deficit could have been worse with Towles coming up a yard short on a dive for the end zone as time expired.

"If we don't fumble right before the half when it's 21-14, it's probably a different ballgame," said Franklin-Simpson coach Tim Schlosser, who added that his Wildcats were "supposed to get beat by 50-something points, and at halftime I thought we were in good shape."

Cousins Jerrell Wickware (127 yards on 16 carries) and Darrius Wickware (97 yards on 23 carries) paced the Wildcats' offense.

Leading 28-14 after the turnover on downs, Highlands capitalized with a pair of fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns - Jake True's 7-yard run and Towles' 1-yard dive.

"When you deal with high school kids, sometimes you have a hard time convincing them of the game plan," Schlosser said. "We wanted to slow the ball down. We were going to onside kick every time. We weren't afraid to get beat by 80 to have a chance to win the football game."
