Amelia & Nick

While waiting for a table with friends, Amelia, an attorney who grew up in McCreary County and attended Centre College, walked into the restaurant’s cocktail lounge and ordered a glass of wine. She went to sit on a bar stool at the same time as Nick, owner of Gatewood’s Automotive and Detailing in North Carolina. Amelia ended up with the seat, but Nick ended up with her phone number.

Nick and Amelia both love Jimmy Buffett, so a Buffett concert seemed the perfect place for him to ask for her hand in marriage. Amelia’s sister-in-law was there to snap photos of the happy couple!

As a child, the bride had always imagined her wedding happening at her home. In 2001, Amelia’s parents moved to a beautiful home in Somerset, overlooking Lake Cumberland. They had a casual barbeque rehearsal dinner aboard two tied houseboats. Guests enjoyed dinner and an evening of fun, cruising along Lake Cumberland. In lieu of a groom’s cake, the couple opted to have an ice cream sundae bar at the rehearsal dinner instead, featuring Nick’s favorite dessert, Extreme Moose Tracks ice cream.

For the September nuptials, Nick and Amelia chose to be wed at the St. Patrick Episcopal Church in Somerset, Kentucky. Nick’s “Papa” Gentry did a reading during the ceremony, a tribute to a favorite childhood memory of Nick’s. Amelia’s godparents served the couple communion. Nick was so excited to be wed to Amelia that he couldn’t wait for the end of the ceremony to kiss the bride... much to the amusement of the guests!

Amelia wore a Priscilla of Bos-ton dress and carried a cascading bouquet of white orchids with a pin and handkerchief from the bride’s great-grandmother and namesake. The six bridesmaids wore tawny champagne dresses by Lula Kate while the two junior bridesmaids wore coordinating dresses by Peggy Hoyle. There were six groomsmen. The ring bearer’s pillow was handmade by a bridesmaid when Amelia couldn’t find one she liked.

The reception decor took on a French chateau feeling, creating a natural garden style that was relaxed, with colors based on the flowers they loved. Three different styles of arrangements adorned the tables with arrangements including hydrangeas and phalaenopsis orchids. Some tables featured French cloches with bird nests and single orchids while others featured boxes crafted from recycled fence wood made by her father.

Guests were greeted upon arrival with champagne, enjoying passed appetizers and an open bar. The plated dinner featured filet mignon. The wedding cake featured three different flavors of cake; amaretto, chocolate with peanut butter (the groom’s request) and strawberries with champagne. The cake featured hand-made gum paste recreations of some of the flowers used in the reception’s decor. Alternately, guests could choose from two different flavors of cheesecake, key lime or plain topped with raspberry sauce.

As a nod to their concert engagement, the wedding planner chose a DJ who happens to front a Jimmy Buffett cover band. He sang Buffett songs as guests enjoyed their dinner and danced their way through the romantic evening.
