January will ring in not just a new year, but an exciting new art exhibit space as well: the Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center Children’s and Youth Gallery. Inaugurating the new space will be Redwood Cooperative School’s FLEDGLING VOICES, an exhibit of student work that is literally “for the birds.” FLEDGLING VOICES will feature the work of students from Redwood Cooperative School, a progressive Pre-K through 8 school in the heart of Lexington’s Zandale neighborhood. Led by art teacher Carrie Blaydes, the work shares a common thread: inspiration from naturalist John James Audubon’s artistic and scientific masterpiece "Birds of America." Published between 1827 and 1838, Audubon’s oversized “elephant folio” book includes 435 life-sized images of North American birds, which he personally scouted, illustrated, and painted. Redwood students, in turn, have created artworks inspired by the book and their cross-curricular study of both the artistic and scientific principles involved in Audubon’s work. As a school committed to conservation and environmental sustainability, this exhibit also invites students and spectators alike to consider the best way to be both admirers and responsible stewards of our birds, whose populations have dwindled alarmingly in the last several decades. FLEDGLING VOICES will open at the Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center on Friday, January 6, 2023, 6-7:30pm with a reception open to the public. The show will run through Saturday, March 4. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Thursday: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., Friday: 11 a.m. – 8 p.m., Saturday: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. EVENT DETAILS Exhibit: FLEDGLING VOICES Venue: Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center Children’s and Youth Gallery (upstairs). 141 East Main Street, Lexington KY 40507 Opening Date: Friday, January 6, 2023 Run Dates: Friday, January 6 through Saturday, March 4, 2023
