ActOut Theatre, Lexington’s only theater company focused on telling LGBTQ+ stories, will present the revival version of the Broadway award-winning play The Boys in the Band by Mart Crowley. The play will be July 19-28 at the Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center in Lexington. The times for the play will be 8 p.m. July 19, 20, 26 and 27, and July 28 the play will be at 2 pm. Tickets are on sale for $20. First presented in 1968 and then revived with acclaim on Broadway in 2018, The Boys in the Band is an iconic piece of LGBTQ+ theater that speaks to both gay and gay-friendly audiences and creates a present-day cultural awareness of the LGBTQ+ community by addressing the present through the past. The play, whose themes remain relevant 50 years after its first staging, explores the lives of nine men who gather for a birthday party in the spring of 1968 in New York. The characters confront issues of self-loathing, homophobia and bigotry that were prevalent among LGBTQ+ people in the day — and are very much alive in 2019. The ActOut production is directed by Marcus Roland and features Paul Brown, Antwuan Fondren, Garret Gabriel, Sam Hicks, James Holeman, J.P. Johnson, Andrew Shayde, Joseph Sturgill and Kyle Wade.
