FOURTH OF JULY WEEK FUN GUIDE

By Amanda Harper

Independents Weeks

Celebrate local businesses with Local First Lexington! Take a selfie (or photo of your pet!) at an independent, locally-owned business in Lexington. Post it to Facebook or Instagram with #IndependentsLex and tag both Local First Lexington and the local business. In FIVE daily random drawings, you could win up to $100 toward a purchase at your favorite Local First Lexington business. It’s so easy!

Lexington Legends vs. Asheville Tourists

What better way to celebrate America than with its national pastime? The Legends square off against Asheville Saturday through Tuesday. The 3rd is their 4th of July Celebration with fireworks following the game. (It’s also $0.25 hot dog night!)

The Great Buffalo Chase 5K

Every year, this race is a local favorite. Take a run through the Buffalo Trace distillery grounds and see their historic aging warehouses, production facilities and lots of beautiful Kentucky scenery. Proceeds from the race go towards funding the VFW Post 4075’s annual Fourth of July fireworks show in Franklin County.

Louisville Waterfront Fourth 2018

If you’re headed out of Lexington for the Fourth, Louisville is a great destination. Their annual musical event is a fantastic way to feel the spirit. The 2018 lineup includes funk, soul, jazz and hip-hop acts. In between all the bands, guests can enjoy family-friendly activities like science demonstrations or pony rides.

The Great American Pie Contest and Ice Cream Social

This is a hidden gem of Lexington’s summer. Local bakers will enter their best pies for a chance to win a blue ribbon at Fifth Third Bank Pavilion on Tuesday, July 3rd at noon. Attendees get to sample pie and ice cream until they run out! Enjoy patriotic music under the pavilion while enjoying a tradition that’s as American as… well, apple pie!

Fifth Third Bank Presents Lexington’s Fourth of July Festival

Celebrate with all of Lexington! The highly-anticipated parade starts at 2pm on the 4th from Midland Avenue to Mill Street. But the real star of the day is the street festival! Live music and entertainment in the Lower Courthouse Plaza, Corner of Short & Upper, Phoenix Park and Fifth Third Bank Pavilion will delight the whole family. Shop from vendor booths or concessions vendors set up around the area. There’s so much to see, do and enjoy!

Fireworks

It’s not an Independence Day celebration without flags and fireworks! This year’s show is sure to be an incredible one. The Lexington fireworks will be launched from the Lexington Financial Center at 10pm. New this year: download the Classic Rock 92.1FM app for a special broadcast timed to the show! Of course, you can check out other fireworks shows in surrounding cities. Some are happening almost every night, so check them out!

Patriotic Music Concert

Enjoy The Lexington Philharmonic as they play patriotic tunes. This annual event is much-loved by locals. Grab a blanket or chairs and head down to the Morrison Lawn at Transylvania University on Tuesday, July 3rd. The concert starts at 8pm.

Bluegrass 10,000

Kick off your Independence Day with the 42nd annual Bluegrass 10,000! This is a local tradition that you won’t want to miss, whether you’re a runner, a walker, a roller or a spectator. The 10k Run/Walk starts at 7:30 on the Fourth. The 10K Push Wheelchair or 10K Crank Wheelchair Race starts at 7:25am. The 1-Mile Fun Run is at 8am.
