More Than A Name: A Storybook Inn

When visitors plan trips to the Bluegrass State, one of the top priorities is finding an experience that immerses them in the beauty, history, and charm of our state. A Storybook Inn, located at 277 Rose Hill Avenue in Versailles, offers all of that alongside modern updates that make it a luxurious stay that feels like something right out of a fairy tale.

With a history dating back to the early 1800s, it stands the oldest Select Registry Inn in central Kentucky. Historically known as Sunny Hollow or the Amsden- Haupt House, A Storybook Inn served as home to several generations of the descendants of John Amsden, Sr. Over the years, expansions and updates to the original gingerbread Victorian structure helped create an idyllic gathering place for visitors from around the world.

At A Storybook Inn, it is a priority for the Innkeeper to create a tranquil ambiance for the overnight guests. As such, the inn does not host weddings, showers or any event that would in any way disturb the peace and tranquility of overnight guests who have come for a quiet getaway.

The spacious property features a reclaimed, naturally rambling landscape that offers guests the feeling of sitting in a quiet haven away from the world. Stone walkways meander through the property, beckoning you out for a stroll among the magnolias, redbuds, and roses toward the old stone pond. Beyond the wooded property line, guests can visit Big Spring Park, which boasts a wooded, paved walking trail.

Stepping inside, guests immediately notice the fully restored wide-planked Ash hardwood floors. The 31’ long formal living room features Chippendale and plaster cast molding that pops against the rich red walls. Moving into the 23’ long dining room, the original coffered ceiling is breathtaking. The custom imported Italian marbleized plaster finished walls in classic European style make this a beautiful place to linger over dinner and conversation. Breakfast is served in the gorgeous 48’ long conservatory.

There is a working elevator, and the inn is ADA- compliant. The original carriage house now serves as a four-bay garage with a charging station for owners of Teslas or Priuses. From hand-pressed high thread count sheets (laundered using green-friendly, non-toxic cleaning agents) to Bubble Massage Whirlpool baths, every comfort of guests is considered and accounted for.

A Storybook Inn offers a number of options for accommodations. Four themed suites each offer incredible luxury, from stunning antique furniture to private en suite bathrooms. The Huntsman’s Chase Guesthouse features 3.5 bedrooms. Guests can choose to rent the entire guesthouse or individual bedrooms, depending on availability. It’s perfect for families, honeymooning couples, Keeneland-bound visitors, or staycationers who simply want to get away from it all.

The owner, C. Elise Buckley, holds a genuine passion for gracious hospitality, meticulous cleanliness of the inn, a love of history, and an eye for excellence. She has turned the stately property and acreage into a one-of-a-kind experience. Visitors remark often, “You have created a rare combination of comfortable elegance.”

A Storybook Inn has twice been awarded Top Ten Best Overall Bed and Breakfast in the US and Top Ten Best Overall in the South. The inn annually earns the Travelers Choice award from TripAdvisor. Several magazines across the US have recognized A Storybook Inn as the best place to stay in the area, whether guests are planning a trip along the Bourbon Trail, in need of a homebase for Keeneland or the Kentucky Derby or enjoying a romantic getaway in the heart of the Bluegrass.
