Art in the Bluegrass: Lexarts Hop

Have you ever wanted to explore Lexington’s art scene, but didn’t exactly know where to start? The LexArts HOP is a fun and easy way to explore the city and its many talented artists.

Now in its 24th year, this gallery hop-style series features art at 44 different venues, including restaurants, museums, artists’ studios, retail outlets and other creative spaces, that open their doors to HOP-ers on the third Friday of every other month. Official HOP Guides are available at any of the HOP locations, at the LexArts offices (161 N. Mill St.) or are available via download on the LexArts website.

“When the HOP started back in 1994, it was a major catalyst in downtown development because it brought people back into the city after the work day,” said LexArts Executive Director Nan Plummer.

“Now, it brings more people into artists’ studios, restaurants, galleries and other venues. It’s amplified the number of places artists can sell their work and brings a lot of attention to both the artists and venues.”

Thanks to presenting sponsorship support from McBrayer Law Firm, the LexArts HOP is free to the public. Each venue offers a unique and new experience from one HOP to the next and many of the pieces on display are available for purchase.

“Some people come to shop for art, while others simply visit HOP locations to see and experience it,” said Plummer. “That’s one of the reasons LexArts undertook this initiative so many years ago. We believe in real art by artists who are your friends, neighbors and fellow Kentuckians. It’s a snapshot of what’s going on artistically in Central Kentucky.”

LexArt’s HOP plays a central role in supporting the organization’s vision of creating a progressive and innovative community inspired by the arts. As Lexington’s premier cultural development, advocacy and fundraising organization, LexArts offers a wide array of services and programs aimed at integrating art into the daily lives of Lexingtonians. They also operate ArtsPlace Gallery, one of the city’s premier visual arts galleries which offers a continually-rotating array of high-quality works by Kentucky-based artists.

The remaining LexArts HOP dates are as follows: May 19th, July 20th, September 21st and November 16th. For more information, visit or
