Official Opening of ITNBluegrass in Fayette County

Posted: September 10th, 2008

ITNBluegrass (Independent Transportation Network) is a 24/7 automobile transportation program for Central Kentucky elders and visually-impaired adults that is starting in Fayette County this month then moving to Jessamine, Woodford, Bourbon and Scott Counties within the next year or so.

As the fourth local affiliate of the national non-profit ITNAmerica to begin operations (behind Charleston, SC; Orlando, FL; and Greater Los Angeles),  ITNBluegrass is positioned to both address and alleviate the current and growing transportation demands of our aging citizens ahead of most of the country.

The Bluegrass, like most other medium/small markets, has developed beyond public transportation’s ability to provide mobility solutions for those who should not longer drive due to aging or vision issues.

The founder and president of ITNAmerica, Katherine Freund will be speaking to regional public officials on Monday, September 22 at a private forum . Ms. Freund will be flying in the weekend before from Portland, Maine (where ITN began 13 years ago) to join us for our First Rides Day festivities.  Following the forum, there will be a  Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony and First Official Ride.

The forum begins at 9:00 a.m. (continental breakfast is available at 8:30 a.m.) in the meeting room at The Café at Joseph-Beth.  The Ribbon-Cutting and First Official Ride (media event) follows at 10 a.m. under the front roof of Lexington Green.

The strategy for expansion into Jessamine, Woodford, Scott and Bourbon  counties is open for  suggestions and development.  We must recruit a pool of volunteers in each county with at least one paid driver and a donated car.  ITNBluegrass is not asking for tax dollars.  We rely on memberships and fares and community support and are registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization.
