After 24 years on pause, legendary bluegrass quartet Hot Rize is back together with a new album, When I'm Free and a worldwide tour. Hot Rize started in 1978 and became one of Americas most popular bluegrass ensembles renown for their powerful stage presence, humor and master musicianship. The band picked up where they left off after disbanding at the peak of their fame in 1990. Featuring Dr. Banjo Pete Wernick, bass master Nick Forster and multi instrumentalist Tim O'Brien, the band now includes Grammy winner Bryan Sutton on guitar to replace the late Charles Sawtelle. If you love bluegrass music and simply amazing musicianship, don't miss this concert!

On Friday, May 29, our friends at Break Room At Pepper are hosting a FREE drive-in screening of the cult road movie Two-Lane Blacktop in the James Pepper Distillery parking lot. We'll be doing it true drive-in style with sound transmitted to your car radio or portable device. There will be food trucks and a classic car cruise in. Anyone who brings a 1955 Chevy 150 or a 1970 Pontiac GTO will get a free t-shirt and two screening tickets to the closing night event with director Monte Hellman! If you haven't had an opportunity to visit this beautiful creek-side landmark in the Distillery District then this is the perfect opportunity! Drive-In parking will begin at 8 pm and the movie will start at dusk. If you'd like to watch the movie in the wide open, please bring your own chair and portable radio.

In its 10-year history, the Markey Golf Classic has raised over $3 million dollars for cancer research in support of the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center. This two-day event includes an elegant dinner complete with live music and auction at one of Lexington’s signature Thoroughbred horse farms followed by a golf tournament where two-person teams compete for prizes. Last year’s dinner was held at Stonestreet Farm and featured a catered meal by Donna Potter and wine provided by Jackson Family Wines. Champion Trace Golf Course played host to the golf tournament which featured a putt-off and hole-in-one competition sponsored by Audi of Lexington. Prizes for the winners included engraved trophies by L.V. Harkness and Rolex watches. Time and location information to follow!

The Kentucky Great Writers Series connects authors to readers and writers in an intimate atmosphere. Each event starts at 7:00 PM with a 30-minute open-mic session to give the audience a chance to participate. At 7:30 the readings by featured authors will begin. Each author will read for 15-20 minutes from a work of their choice. After the author readings, the audience will have the opportunity to get books signed. Locally owned Morris Book Shop will be on hand to sell books and refreshments will be provided. Featured authors will be Joseph G. June is National Cancer Survivorship Month, and to mark the occasion is Markey’s Expressions of Courage Survivor’s Day event, an art exhibit showcasing original, artistic expressions connected in some way to an experience with a cancer diagnosis, or crafted by or in memory of a Markey patient whose battle has ended. Facing a cancer diagnosis is no easy feat. Patients at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center have always inspired the community with their strength and courage, with Survivor’s Day being no exception, as Markey honors the experiences of those who have battled cancer with a day of recognition and celebration.
