Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation Yes, Mamm! Program Awarded Grant
For More Than $21,000 from Lexington Cancer Foundation
Funding will provide program to reduce hair loss for patients undergoing chemotherapy
Lexington, Ky. (November 19, 2019) – Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation’s Yes, Mamm! program has been awarded a generous grant of $21,450 by the Lexington Cancer Foundation. The grant will be used to provide free DigniCap Scalp Cooling Systems to all women receiving chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer at Saint Joseph East Outpatient Cancer Center and Breast Center, regardless of their ability to pay. The DigniCap system considerably reduces hair loss for chemotherapy patients.
“We’re thrilled to be able to provide this extra bit of care to our breast cancer patients free of charge,” said Leslie Smart, CFRE, president, Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation. “One of the most heartbreaking aspects of breast cancer is how badly it damages a woman’s self-image. This amenity is truly a blessing and will help patients maintain their confidence during treatment.”
The DigniCap system is a cutting-edge treatment used in conjunction with chemotherapy to lower the temperature of a patient’s scalp. By cooling the scalp during chemotherapy, the DigniCap system greatly decreases the amount of chemotherapy drugs that reach the hair follicles. This dramatically reduces the amount of hair that a patient may lose from the treatment. These caps, which will be provided free of charge through the grant, are normally $275 each and are not currently covered by insurance.
This advancement is just one way that CHI Saint Joseph Health is continuing to provide excellent cancer care in Kentucky. For more information, visit www.CHISaintJosephHealth.org.
