• 1 gallon fresh apple cider
• 1 orange, separated but not peeled
• 1 bosc pear, sliced and de-seeded
• 1-inch piece of peeled, fresh ginger
• 2 cinnamon sticks
• 1 tsp. whole cloves
• (optional) ½ tsp. allspice berries
• (optional) 3 star anise pods
Pour apple cider into your slow cooker. 5-quart size or larger works best. Add pear and orange.
In the center of a piece of cheese cloth, add cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice and ginger. Tie the bundle with kitchen twine and drop into the pot.
Set crock pot to low and let sit for 3-4 hours. If desired, strain the cider.
Serve in mugs. Can be garnished with fresh or dried fruit, cinnamon sticks, star anise pods or a pat of butter (trust us on this one.)
If you’re serving a crowd, keep topping the pot off with more fresh apple cider and keep warm. If you replace more than half, kick the heat up to high for 30 minutes to help the flavors mingle.
Optional kick: If you’d like yours spiked, bourbon, applejack or cinnamon liqueur are all lovely choices. (Adapted from The Kitchn)
