If one person has been able to keep their pizazz during the pandemic, it is entertainer extraordinaire, Helena Handbasket, known to her fans as the “the First Lady of rhythm, beauty, and laughter.” So, I had a socially-distanced sit down with this glamour girl.
TOPS: How have you stayed so sassy throughout COVID?
HH: Honey, I was not going to let a little virus take away my va-va-voom. I never leave the house without dressing to impress and putting my face on. You never know who you’re going to run into, and you don’t want to have to duck down a grocery aisle to avoid someone ‘cause you’ve gone out looking like a mess in a mask.
TOPS: Speaking of masks, what masks should every woman own?
HH: Every woman needs three masks in her wardrobe. First, just like you need a LBD, little black dress, you need a LBM—little black mask that goes anywhere and with everything. Next, you need something for your more festive occasions. I would not be able to live with my rhinestone mask. Third, something fun or whimsical. I, personally, have one with big, old red lips on it—since I can’t show off my own.
TOPS: How would you recommend playing up the eyes, since they’re what is visible?
HH: Start with a defined brow. Add some luscious lashes. And, I’m not going to judge you if you have to use falsies… and that doesn’t just apply to lashes, if you know what I mean. And, a little sparkle never hurt anybody, so don’t be afraid of a glittery eye shadow.
TOPS: How have you been keeping busy?
HH: Well, you know I’ve got a sweet tooth that goes all the way to my ankles, so I’ve been baking up a storm. I’ve called bingo at a campground or two. And, I’ve performed at a couple of backyard birthday parties. But I can not wait to get back on stage and resume my drag brunches at Epping’s at Eastside, because you know how much I love a big, warm hand.
