Day Trippin'

Who’s ready for a road trip?! Nothing says summertime quite like packing up the car and hitting the highway. It’s the perfect time to take some little day trips or weekend getaways. If you’re rarin’ to go, but short on ideas, we’ve got you covered! Here are some wonderful destinations within a (fairly) short drive from here that you’ll definitely want to visit this summer… maybe even a few times this year!

Louisville

Lexington’s sister city offers so much, we couldn’t hope to cover it all in one little paragraph. We think there’s something for just about everyone! Families will love Kentucky Kingdom, the Louisville Zoo, Kentucky Science Center and all the fun at Waterfront Park. Horse racing enthusiasts will obviously want to visit Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum. Take a girls’ or guys’ night out to tour the distilleries, breweries and wineries in the area. Sports fans will want to see the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory while art aficionados will want to visit the Speed Art Museum. From amazing concerts and theater to world-class dining, we think you’ll have a great time in LOU.

Must do: Pick up a copy of TOPS Louisville and go exploring!

Cincinnati

Baseball, beer, underground tours, art, shopping, history, an incredible zoo… Cincinnati offers cultural experiences by the boatload. We love walking through Over-the-Rhine, checking out some amazing art, then pulling together a delicious dinner at Findlay Market.

Must do: Take selfies in the American Sign Museum... it's very Insta-worthy!

Lake Cumberland

Proudly billed as “The Houseboat Capital of the World,” Lake Cumberland boasts hiking, fishing, camping, golf and of course boating. In the immediate area, you’ll find wineries, dining, rustic accommodations, parks and more to keep your whole family entertained.

Must do: Get out on the water... in a houseboat, if at all possible (you can rent one!)

Natural Bridge & Red River Gorge

Get out of town and into the natural splendor of Kentucky! This state resort park offers tons of outdoor activities and stunning views. Hikers know that this area offers some of the coolest trails in the state.

Must do: Ride the skylift up and see the Natural Bridge from the top. It's an incredible vista you'll never forget!

Bardstown

Bourbon is a big part of Kentucky’s DNA. If there’s a heart of Bourbon country, it’s Bardstown. There’s plenty of history within the quaint town, and it serves as your gateway to all of the many distilleries scattered throughout the area.

Must do: Make reservations for My Old Kentucky Dinner Train experience.

Frankfort

If it’s been a while since you really explored Kentucky’s capital city, it’s high time you hit the road! From historic landmarks to great dining, there’s tons to explore. And if you’ve never done the “tourist thing” in Frankfort, what are you waiting for?

Must do: Visit the Kentucky state capital!

Glendale

Love antiquing? Take a step back in time in this quaint little Kentucky town. Glendale’s many antique malls and boutique shops offer hours of treasure hunting. (Plus you can stop off in Bardstown on the way back!)

Must do: Have lunch at The Whistle Stop, right alongside the train tracks. And yes, they serve Fried Green Tomtaotes!
