With a first impression of Southern tradition, but a gradual building of flashy, forward and contemporary themes throughout its interior, this historic Hanover Avenue home is a vibrant reflection of the homeowners’ personality, creativity and desire for classic comfort.
Inside this symmetrically balanced downtown home, visitors will marvel at an appreciation for Southern sentiment with added touches of glamour, pop culture and color to enliven spaces. Originally an American four-square layout, the homeowners remodeled sections of the home to create fluidity and merge rooms into larger unified spaces. The home was designed with a strong emphasis on hospitality, with formal and casual settings for dining, cocktails, and hosting company indoors and out.
A short curved drive bends before the brick front porch, which is characterized by two inviting sitting areas on either side of the front door. The gray-blue painted brick is cleanly contrasted with an eggshell trim. The front of the home is symmetrically balanced with mirroring elements, including arched openings on either side of the porch and matching turquoise Ikat rugs that mark the twin sitting areas. Through the completely glass front door, the openness of the home is immediately apparent with a view through the foyer to the backyard.
Welcomed inside to a vision of old Southern living, guests enter into a classic foyer that exposes an antique staircase and spiraling banister. French doors on the left reveal a sitting room where formality is underlined by the presence of a sleek Baby Grand piano. The bleach-white room contains four facing wing-backed chairs from Norwalk with embellishments of pink in the form of throw pillows. The original fireplace in the room was updated with a Carrera marble hearth.

During the remodeling process, the homeowners created an opening on the right side of the foyer that enters into the linear-shaped unified dining room, bar and kitchen area.
At the front of the room, the formal dining area contains a solid birch table and two birdcage host chairs, which are defined with bronze nail heads, at either end. The experts at Norwalk Furniture provided all furnishings in the home. A chandelier dripping with crystals, courtesy of Ferguson Lighting, hangs over the table.
Toward the middle of the space, is a gallery style kitchen where an oversized Carrera marble island with a matte finish engulfs the kitchen area. Called the heart of the home, the kitchen is sprinkled with robust, contemporary pieces of original artwork from around the country. On the right side of the kitchen, the recurring Carrera marble is incorporated into a chevron pattern backsplash designed by Chris Rodgers. Clean white custom cabinets are stacked to the ceiling for optimal storage space, with some sections containing glass facings for the display of fine dinnerware. Pieratt’s of Lexington provided a flat screen television over the Carrera marble island, which is lined with barstools upholstered in a zesty orange Zebra pattern. The kitchen is furnished with Wolf Range appliances supplied by Fergusons.
The kitchen concludes with a beverage station set off from the rear of the kitchen, containing a vast serving countertop, identical glass front refrigerators on either end, and a wine cooler and prep sink. A series of windows spanning across the beverage station’s serving counter can be opened to access an outdoor bar on the opposite side of the wall.
The formal sitting room transitions into a Los Angeles inspired leisure room that provides an escape to the expansive patio. The homeowners utilized original shelving units in this part of the home and miniature upholstered sitting areas alongside windows. A large sectional couch in a slate blue is directed toward a sitting area distinguished by faux rabbit fur chairs and a cowhide rug spattered in gold. This retro room also features locally acquired pieces, such as a striking Hindu goddess figure from Scout in Lexington.

At the top of the stairs on the second level, the homeowners created an art gallery vibe on the landing with a personal collection of colorful pieces.
Off of the landing, the homeowners worked with their contractor to transform a once-bedroom into a grandiose walk-in closet fit for royalty. The closet includes a central granite-topped island for storage, a runway mirror, rows of built-in hanging racks and built-in shoe racks on the far wall.
With stark and dramatic black and white contrast, the master suite features an ivory iron bed with distinctive horse hoof footing. Behind the bed, an accent wall covered in black and white geometric wallpaper enhances the room with a three-dimensional effect. Two double-door white closets are on either side of an arched sitting window with an assortment of faux fur pillows.
The black and white theme continues in an attached master bathroom with a claw-foot soaking tub. Impressive details in the bathroom include the painted black molding, the quatrefoil-print black and white wallpaper, and crystal knob details on the double-sink vanity. An oversized walk-in shower encased in glass is assembled with matte black subway tiles.
The second-level landing branches out into two guest bedrooms, one colored in electric pink shades and the other in soothing blue and beige tones. The feminine bedroom is painted in an airy violet and contains a modern take on a classic oriental rug in an ombre fuscia. The bed’s velvet gray headboard pairs nicely with a plush silk eggplant duvet.
The second guest bedroom contains a modern mix of colors and prints, with an iron bed with a matte finish. Prints on the bed include hounds tooth and plaid, with a solid navy quilt and bright yellow throw pillows. This room includes a door opening onto an upper-level deck that overlooks the pool.
A door at the landing leads up another set of stairs to the third-story attic, which was repurposed by the homeowners to serve as a theater room. The floors were finished in a laminate resembling distressed wood, which matches the basement flooring. The living space is set over a wavy contemporary rug, with floor block cushions for up-front viewers.
The homeowners enjoy another view to the outdoors from a cozy window seat decorated in stripes of gray and yellow.
The downstairs space is dedicated to overnight guests, with a foyer painted in a tranquil pea-green that trails into an oriental-inspired sitting room with two turquoise chairs. The guest bathroom contains a long built-in vanity custom-stained in Sangria red. The guest room bed is dressed with a turquoise bird print duvet and set over an oriental pale blue rug.
At the back of the home, a large deck descends to a rectangular pool lined with checkered tiles and rows of alternating rose bushes and Arborvitae trees. Geddes fencing provided a perimeter barrier that allows for privacy in the middle of the city. Rows of wicker lounge chairs on either side of the pool are given a fun pop of color with orange and turquoise throw pillows. A custom-built fire pit sits at the end of the pool where friends can unwind with a cocktail.
